Future Of Gaming - Console-less

After each decade the question of where the gaming industry will lead is always asked and whether they can develop much further. Currently we have 3D gaming, motion and sensor gaming and who knows but the idea of gaming without a console is intriguing. I found this artlicle on about the future, where they are suggesting the possible death of games console's such as playstaion and xbox, to be replaced by a device that will be compatible with everything, they aso came up with some very interesting points and linking it to the current decline in the music indusrty, and as technology developed the latter changed, for example filesharing and online downloading and the way we digitaly get games, for example purchasing games through Xbox Live, and the forever growth of online gaming, and with suggestion of games sales down in the past two years. And the way its becoming possible to download xbox games illegally from the internet and copy onto harrdrive.

heres the article.

Current Trends - Social Gaming

As the fast growth top 10 shows, online gaming is becoming more popular. For 2009, the market share of online games is estimated at one sixth of the total video game market. This share is rising quickly, as are the companies in this field. It took the most successful companies only a few years to make hundreds of millions USD. Chinese Shanda Interactive is the largest pure-play online gaming company with sales of over US$ 700 million. US based Zynga, the maker of FarmVille, made an estimated $270 million in 2009. Traditional game makers are aware of the online goldmine, and are publishing their own online titles.

Like elsewhere in the software industry, the motto in the gaming industry is: acquire or be acquired, resulting in a continuous flow of company transactions:
- Playfish, a successful European maker of social network games, was taken over by Electronic Arts in 2009.
- Koei and Tecmo merged in 2009. Revenues rose, but not enough to move up the ranking.
- Square Enix got into the top 10 after acquiring Eidos in April 2009

Heres a really good article I ound on the subject here.

2010 in the Games Industry

Nintendo lead the games industry in 2010, based on software revenues, despite the economic downfall, gaming is still a big business and seems to be forever growing, especially in the last decade. The top 10 companies now have a combined revenue of over 24 billion USD, in a market estimated to be worth well over 50 billion USD. Towards this day online gaming is the area which tends to be booming, linking to the the fact in the previous blog 4 out of 5 of the fastest growing companies all focus there specialtee on onling gaming. Mobile / Handheld gaming is becoming ever popular what with the improvements in technology. During 2010 sale of software games went down, nothing too dramatic.

in conclusion the year was heavily dominated by nintendo, it seems to me that casual gaming is on the up, and games that be played and enjoyed by familys and freinds, in a relaxed and socialble environment. From personal experience it seems that non gamers also enjoy playing on the wi for its fun and relaxed aproach. Of course hardcore gamers still contribute with Call Of Duty and Red Dead Redemption been heavy hitters but maybe the tides are changing.

I found this really useful and site, giving a better view on some of the heavy hitters in the games industry, the database site is a very useful site and provides thousands of links to game developers around the world, it also divides the companies into the area they focus on in the ganes industy as follows,

- Developer
- Publisher
- Developer And Publisher
- Organisation
- Mobile / Handheld

This is a very good source for researching companies, and finding the locations.

Where Id Like To Fit In The Indusrty.

So far having been in my second year of my course. I am beginning to gain a further idea of a role in the industry inwhich I would like to take. I am really interested in the concept art area for example coming up with game environments and Characters, however Id also like to adapt concept art to other areas, for example designing Album covers / posters and further more. Also highly influenced by tatoo designs and and potentially getting involved with that. I have recently really enjoyed my experiences in Unity and would like to learn alot more about that software.
