This is my final concept design for my character, the quality does not look as good as it has been scanned using a very average scanner and looks alot better in person. As u can tell I wanted a messy style being influenced by work form Ralph steadman during this project. I quite like it but I wish I had more time to build into it to improve on it and would have liked to create a digital image aswell using photoshop but having not managed my time as apropiatly as would have liked. These concept art was drawn using chacoal and pastal and I created both a fire version of the character and water/ice version to give an idea on how the character looks in both. But overall I believe its not a bad attempt and I enjoyed taking a different aproach to what I would have normally took and enjoyed exloring different kind of medias. I really like the texture effects on the character and the colour.

The Thing Intro

Im going to be critacally analysing the intro to The Thing where the helecopter is chasing after the dog, Well the Scene starts of with a range of long shots concentrating on on surrounding landscrape and scenery informing the viewers of the setting of the film and providing a kind of deserted feel and creates a dark atmosphere, as you then see in the distance a helicopter is aproaching, kind of emphasising the point how deserted it is as thats the closest human activity that is available. The camera then concentrates on moving in on the helicopter revealing to the audeience that the helicopter is a big part of the storyline and straight away gets you intrueged as to whats the purpose of the helicopter. You are then showed a over the shoulder effect of someone climbing out of the helicopter which is really effective as it gives the impression in which they are after something however you are not sure what and creates tension.As then it shows another effective shot as the camera stays in the same position however shows the helicopter moving away into distance emphasising again the point of how deserted the area is and is very clever as it gets u thinking what are they after as theres nothing around for miles. You are then showed a close up of one of the characters hower u are not shown any of the identiy of the character, all your are provided with is there after something and they want it bad. You are then given a shot of the dog, the creature they are chasing. I really like the way in which you are delibaratly shown the identiy of the dog and kiven a close up in which he looks towards the screen, This is done deliberatly as it automatically gets you on the side of the dog as you presume there hunting. The chase scene in which the helicopter is chasing the dog is shot mainly on the ground as you see the helicopter flying over which creats a gripping atmosphere as u can see both in the same shot so you can tell how close they and shows plenty of wide shots as the helicopter turns around showing the dog run across the screen which is a really effective shot. I also really like the kind of first person shot similar to video games in which you can see from the peson in the helicopter as he attempts to shoot the dog, which is another great shot to keep you intrigued and gripped to the storyline as you can see the chase from the (hunters) point of view which is gives u the feeling as if you are involved in the chase. I also like the shot inwhich you see the the helicopter aproaching.

Heres is a few colour experiments I did taking the one pose. For these I just experiemented using charcoal and acrylic paint, I quite like the results however Id like to experiemnt using coloured chalk as I think it could be used to create some good textures.

Character Design 1.4



Heres 2 images I drew for potential costumes for my character. Oringinally I was more tempted to go with the kind of star wars like robe outfit which I had included. However I looked around the internet and gained a few influences from kind of medievel armour in which I had adapted to me character, however through drawing out the rougth sketch I noticed I accidently got the idea that my charcter could use the tubes shape I drew to store the power.The tubes could run to both side of the arms where he unleashes the special move. Aswell as depending on which power he was using the tubes would change coulour. As a gameplay idea I like the plan that say the player keeps missing with their attacks, Then my character could charge up his power for a deadlier effect resulting in more life lost for the player, Also im tempted by the idea of having one of his powers like a sheild which allows him to charge up his moves without getting affected. Im not going to dismiss the idea totally of a robe and will keep the idea as a backup.

Character Design 1.3



I was recently checking out a few games and thought of Bioshock, reason I thought of Bioshock is because similar to what im trying to acheive with my character. Is that you can give yourself an injection which makes you asscesable to a variety of different special attributes focusing on the hand, Which is my main area of attack on my character. and provides you with a variety of different moves from flame attack, ice attack and even the ability to contol your enemies, I like this idea but instead of using something like an Inection I could use something like a robotic kind of dial which my character could use to control what state he is in.

Heres a few variations I did for the design and shape of the Head, I really like the idea of using a Hood, think It would be quite effective for the intro of the battle where the player cant see his head until the part where he reveils it,I also quite like the bottom righ design with the horns on top of his head instead of the side.

Heres 2 coloured illustrations of the Devil Drawing, It was quickly coloured as I did'nt want to go into too much detail but I wanted to give myself an Idea of how the colours would look. I decided to colour one in Red representing fire and one Blue representing Ice, as I have really grown into the idea of my character been able to change in battle from Fire to Ice giving the players more of a challenge to defeat the boss, Im also toying with the idea of having an Electrcity version aswell to add even more extra depth.

Character Design 1.0

During the crit I was given advice to take a look at the game Diablo, so I had a look at the lastest game Diablo 3 which is not yet out, but it has some very good videos on youtube including a trailor and a video showing the gameplay inwhich they come across a end of level boss which has elements of fire, which I can take influence such has how the boss uses the elements of fire and special moves and how the character is animated onto the video game, also I really like the environment inwhich Diablo uses such as a kind of ancient runins/medievel.

I recently designed these 2 character taking influence from previous research, out of the 2 I really like the devil like creature, and have ideas inwhich i can take and develeop that character, however I plan to desing some more characters to give me more variety to choose from but I really like that design.

I also had my final crit in which I was given a whole lot of useful infomation such as where I could research and given some great examples of characters I could take inluence from into developing my character. I was also told to explore the elements of fire and not just red fire but kind of blue animated fire, This game me an Idea to have the character be able to control the elements of fire,water and electricity, such as on the game Bioshock where u have different powers. I also really like another idea have it as a kind of spirit underneath the armour such as the character on Hellboy 2.

Character Design 0.7

Recently just played the demo for the upcoming game Dante's Inferno which is to be released in Febuary on Xbox 360 and PS3, Reasons I can take influence from this game is theres a majority of the charaters designed which are influenced and based on hell and fire. Something i am basing my character design on. I also really like the design of the characters and how alot of the bosses from what I have seen are emphasised by the size of the character and the wide variety of speciial moves they include and an idea of certail abilities which could be incorporated into my character, something I can consider into my design. I would have liked to have played the full game to gain a better knowledge and gain more inluences from the game however with the game not coming out till Febuary I will unfortunaly have to keep to scrrenshots and a game preview.
